Zenotech wins a new contract with the Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) to boost how autonomous vehicles and systems operate in challenging environments. The project will bring Zenotech’s technical expertise and products into action to examine data compression for secure delivery via emerging 5G and satellite U-space service data streams.
The project, AIRSIGHT, was one of 21 contracts worth £2.1m awarded last year by DASA on behalf of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl). The funding was offered to the best minds in the industry to discover and fast-track innovative solutions to improve unmanned autonomous systems.
Each winning project will examine how to improve autonomous systems in challenging conditions, from rugged terrain to varying wind speeds and sea states, to support defence and civil applications. Zenotech is addressing the operation of unmanned autonomous systems in the urban airspace, where the wind characteristics are notably different from winds experienced by conventional aircraft.
These new investigations leverage previous Innovate UK / Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) funded industry projects to develop Zenotech’s zCFD software and EPIC platform for high performance computing (HPC). These tools will help to generate large aerodynamic datasets that can be provided as services to unmanned aircraft systems operating in built-up areas to account for hazardous local wind conditions.
Zenotech lead for big data and security, James Sharpe, who is heading up AIRSIGHT commented:
“We are thrilled that our project has been chosen as one of the innovative solutions set to fast-track the performance of autonomous vehicles. As we take our existing technology to the next level, this exciting research will drive the huge aerodynamic datasets necessary to allow autonomous vehicles to operate effectively and safely with greater insight into wind conditions.”
